Cabinet Replacement After Water Damage

Cabinet work during kitchen reconstruction after water damage

Cabinets take on water through the toe kick, the box floor and the backs against wet drywall. Some can be cleaned and reused. Others swell or delaminate and have to come out.

A cabinet that looks fine with the doors closed can still have a ruined floor panel. The evaluation visit should include opening doors and checking toe kicks.

How to tell if cabinets can stay

Look for swollen bottoms, soft particleboard, separated seams, peeling wrap and doors that no longer close square. Compare that to what mitigation already removed so you don't pay twice.

If only one run is damaged, you may replace that run and leave the rest. Matching discontinued doors can be hard. Talk that through early if a partial replacement would leave a mismatch.

What a scope usually includes

Cabinet work is more than boxes. A complete scope may include removal, new boxes and doors, drywall or flooring adjustments where cabinets land, and paint or end panels.

Counters, sinks and plumbing reconnects belong in the scope when those pieces can't be salvaged. Spell that out so you're not surprised mid-job.

Allowances and sequence

Cabinets that match the prior quality are easier to align with a claim than a full upgrade. If you want upgrades, separate those costs from the claim-driven replacement.

Cabinets usually follow drywall and paint. Measuring for counters often waits until boxes are set.
