Protecting Your Home During Reconstruction

Reconstruction tools and materials staged for interior rebuild work

Reconstruction creates dust, foot traffic and open rooms. A few protections keep the rest of the house cleaner while work is underway.

Protection is shared. The crew controls the work zone. You control valuables, pets and the rooms that aren't in the scope.

Contain the work zone

Plastic barriers and taped seams help keep drywall dust in the rooms being rebuilt. Ask how supply vents in the work area will be handled so the HVAC system doesn't spread dust.

Floor protection in hallways between the entry and the work zone saves finish floors you're keeping.

Protect what stays

Move furniture and hanging items out of the work rooms before demolition. Cover large pieces that must stay nearby. Label hardware bags so hinges and pulls find their way home.

Keep a walkway clear. Close bedroom doors when sanding is loudest. Report new drips or soft spots right away.

Pets, kids and filters

Tools and fasteners are interesting to pets and small children. Agree on gates and whether exterior doors stay locked when the crew steps outside.

Change filters more often during dusty phases. A filter change after dusty work ends helps when rooms reopen.
