Hardwood floors react to water quickly. Boards can cup, crown, stain or separate, and engineered hardwood can delaminate. Once the mitigation company confirms moisture levels are back to normal, Flood Rewind decides whether your floor can be sanded and refinished or whether some boards need to be replaced. Then we repair it so it blends with the rest of your home.

Timing matters with hardwood. Repairing or refinishing too early can lead to new cupping or gaps as the wood continues to settle, so we wait until your mitigation company confirms the floor is ready. We'll explain the options, from targeted board replacement to refinishing a full room, and what each means for the final look.

Signs you need hardwood floor repair

Your hardwood may need repair if:

  • Boards are cupping (edges higher than centers) or crowning (centers higher than edges)
  • You see dark stains or gray discoloration, especially near sinks, dishwashers or refrigerators
  • Boards have separated, buckled or lifted from the subfloor
  • The finish has turned white or cloudy
  • Engineered hardwood is peeling or delaminating
  • Baseboards along the floor are swollen

Our process after mitigation

Here's our hardwood repair process:

  1. After mitigation: the property's mitigation company confirms the floor and subfloor have reached normal moisture levels.
  2. Assess: we decide whether the floor can be sanded and refinished, or whether boards need to be replaced.
  3. Replace boards: we weave in matching boards where needed and repair the subfloor underneath.
  4. Sand and refinish: we sand the affected area, or the full room for a consistent look, then stain and finish to match.
  5. Trim: we reinstall baseboards and transitions with our trim carpentry crew.

Materials and options

  • Solid hardwood: repair and refinishing, including site-finished oak floors.
  • Engineered hardwood: replacement products are shown on our flooring options page, with brands such as Bruce and Hartco.
  • Alternatives: if you're considering a change, luxury vinyl plank and laminate are covered on our flooring repair and replacement page.
  • Kitchens: hardwood repairs often go with kitchen water damage repair.

Insurance help

Hardwood claims often turn on matching. If boards are replaced in only part of a continuous floor, refinishing the larger area may be needed for a consistent look. We document the layout and the finish so your adjuster can review the scope. See insurance claim reconstruction.

Frequently asked questions

Can water-damaged hardwood be saved?

Often, yes. Once moisture levels are back to normal, minor cupping can sometimes be sanded and refinished. Badly damaged boards need replacing.

Can you match my existing floor?

We match the species, width and finish as closely as possible, and refinish a larger area if needed for consistency.

Do you repair engineered hardwood?

Yes. Damaged engineered planks are usually replaced. We'll help match the product or choose a comparable one.

How long does hardwood repair take?

It depends on whether we're refinishing, replacing boards or both. We'll give you a schedule with your estimate.

Who confirms the floor is ready for repair?

The property's mitigation company confirms the floor and subfloor are at normal moisture levels before we begin.

Can I switch from hardwood to another type of flooring?

Yes. Some homeowners choose engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank or laminate. We'll explain what your claim covers and the cost of any change.
